After the contract is ratified, MPI`s bargaining committee will meet with its employer to finalize and then sign the agreement for printing and distribution to members. Members had the opportunity to present their ideas and proposals to improve their collective agreement at a series of local meetings across the province in September and October. Proposals were also accepted by email (via the online form) for two weeks in October (deadline 16 October 2020). „This round of bargaining had its own challenges, as the committee members and the employer had agreed to negotiate within a limited time frame. In the end, the deal was reached after four months of extremely difficult negotiations and finally by an arbitrator,“ said Michelle Gawronsky, President of MGEU. „In the end,“ Gawronsky said, „I think most members found the combination of salary increases and benefits and job security in this agreement to be a reasonable offer.“ The new four-year agreement includes general salary increases each year, market adjustments during the first 2 years of the agreement, benefits enhancements and a job security clause for the duration of the agreement. The agreement covers the period from 18 September 2016 to 26 September 2020.
